Requirements of Clinical Practice in Australia

In Australia Hypnosis is an unregulated profession and anyone with a weekend’s training could technically hang up a shingle and call themselves a hypnotherapist, and many do. Where they come unstuck is that these under-qualified people typically operate outside of the accepted channels because they cannot get membership to a professional body, comprehensive malpractice insurance that accommodates the specific needs of hypnosis, or health fund rebates.

It is important to note that no fully qualified hypnotherapist belonging to a professional body has ever been sued for malpractice successfully. The same cannot be said for those who have chosen short courses of 5 days or less. Hypnosis is a powerful tool and should be used with respect and a strong evidence based underpinning of knowledge.

So how do you become a fully qualified and recognised Clinical hypnotherapist?

You must have suitable qualifications from a recognised school based either here or overseas with educational equivalents.

You must have membership with an Australian professional association. American associations do not count unless it is the American Society of Clinical Hypnotherapists. This is because most have lower entry levels (often you can join online) and are generally private companies owned by the American based schools.

You must have both public liability and malpractice insurance.
